“The family’s catechetical activity has a special character, which is in a sense irreplaceable… Education in the faith by parents, which should begin from the children’s tenderest age, is already being given when the members of a family help each other to grow in faith through the witness of their Christian lives, a witness that is often without words but which perseveres throughout a day-to-day life lived in accordance with the Gospel… But that is not enough: Christian parents must strive to follow and repeat, within the setting of family life, the more methodical teaching received elsewhere.”
As the quote from Catechesi Tradendae (Catechesis in our Time), explains, parents have the most important role in the faith formation of their child. And it is no wonder! Parents are the most important people in their children’s lives, even as they become young adults. No program, class, or video can take the place of a parent’s sincere witness of faith. This may seem daunting. After all, none of us are perfect. But children and teens are great observers, and when parents make sincere efforts to grow in their relationship with God, they notice. Going to Mass, developing a prayer life, and speaking about the blessings of God in your life can have a deep impact on the faith of your child.
Parents are encouraged to get involved as much as they can in the Faith Formation Programs at our Tri-Parishes. Whether you’re teaching a class, leading a discipleship group, or chaperoning an event, parents are always welcome! Please join us! If you have a special talent or skill that you’d like to share or just want to get involved, please let us know.
